The Comets (now 3-3) scored a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the Bulldogs (3-4) chipped away with single tallies in the 2nd, 7th and 8th innings to overtake UTD. The Comets mustered multiple hits in a single inning just twice against the Redlands trio of Andrew Reuter, Matt Crow and Chris Hardin. Reuter finished up seven innings of work just before the Bulldogs took the lead and was credited with the win. Combined, the Bulldog pitchers scattered eight hits, struck out six Comets and allowed just one walk.
UTD wasted a stellar start from junior left-hander , who went 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks. Reliever took the loss, giving up the go-ahead run in just 0.1 innings of work. Closer entered the game with two on and no outs in the 8th, but squelched the fire to give the Comets a chance in the 9th.
The Comets opened the game with a pair of singles and loaded the bases with a hit batsman before shortstop Nick Bailey delivered the only RBI hit of the game for UTD, scoring both and to give the Comets an early 2-0 lead. Bailey and were the only UTD hitters with multiple hits in the game.
Redlands got one run back in their half of the 2nd, scoring an unearned run off an error, single and sacrifice fly. They tied the game in the 7th with a pair of hits, including a triple that ended Vera's day. In the 8th, another triple, hit batter and RBI double gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.
The Comets open the home portion of their schedule and American Southwest Conference play next weekend against Hardin-Simmons University. The Comets and Cowboys are scheduled to play a single game Friday at 2 pm, then a Saturday doubleheader starting at 12 noon at the UTD Baseball Complex.
