Bruce Power and partners support vaccination program in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties with ‘Hockey Hub’

A donation of $25,000 will support Hockey Hub efficiency model to increase capacity in the region

Bruce Power announced today a new partnership with Haldimand and Norfolk Counties to bring the Hockey Hub model to two mass vaccination clinics in the region. Bruce Power, along with a coalition of organizations will donate $25,000 to procure the necessary materials to set up the Hockey Hub model at the Cayuga and Delhi arenas to allow for greater efficiency and increased capacity in the region.

'We are very grateful to Bruce Power and the partner organizations for their support in scaling up our vaccination program using the Hockey Hub model,' said Kristal Chopp, Mayor of Norfolk County and Chair, Board of Health, Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit. 'With our small population and emergent need to invest in pandemic-related priorities, the financial support for our vaccination program is much appreciated. With increased vaccine supply for our region expected this month, transitioning our clinics to the Hockey Hub model will ensure efficient and safe delivery to increasing numbers of patients.'

The Hockey Hub model was developed by Dr. Ian Arra, Medical Officer of Health at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. It uses a streamlined flow-through process, which can administer more vaccines with fewer clinical staff than traditional mass vaccination clinics.

The model has been adopted and used in a number of public health agencies in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia and New Zealand.

In early May, Bruce Power brought together a coalition of businesses, unions and organizations who provided support to bring the Hockey Hub model to more communities across Ontario. These partners helped to establish one of Ontario's largest vaccination centres at the CAA Centre in Brampton, and are providing support in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties. These partners include:

  • Alectra Utilities
  • BWXT
  • CGI Inc.
  • E.S. Fox
  • EMC a Day & Zimmerman Company
  • EnergySolutions
  • Framatome
  • Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA)
  • Kinectrics
  • LifeLabs
  • LiUNA
  • Maple Leaf Foods
  • Nordion
  • Nuclear Promise X
  • Ontario Chamber of Commerce
  • Power Workers' Union
  • Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario
  • Society of United Professionals
  • SNC-Lavalin

Pat Dalzell, Bruce Power's Head of Corporate Affairs, said Bruce Power is proud to work alongside these partner organizations and public health to help put an end to the pandemic.

'The Hockey Hub vaccination model is just one example of organizations coming together to ensure the health and safety of Ontarians throughout the pandemic, said Dalzell. 'Bruce Power is proud to partner with these organizations and offer our experience and logistical expertise to support the vaccination effort.'

Residents of Haldimand and Norfolk counties may book vaccine appointments at mass clinic sites, a number of pop-up clinics and several participating pharmacies. For full details on how to book, visit HNHU.org/COVAX.
