ANOTHER MILESTONE REACHED IN THE HRBT EXPANSION PROJECT

HAMPTON - Motorists traveling from Hampton to Norfolk can expect a permanent lane shift onto the new North Trestle at the HRBT for traffic headed east along Interstate 64. The shift begins this evening.

Traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed eastbound trestle at the Hampton shoreline. The new bridge will then feed motorists back into the existing eastbound tunnel. The shift allows crews to begin demolishing the existing eastbound trestle and make way for continued project expansion while minimizing impacts to traffic.

Until now, motorists have watched the transformational project take shape. Now, they'll drive on the first permanent structure to be accessed by the public.

Motorists are encouraged to adhere to posted speed limits, drive distraction-free and remain attentive to digital message signs along the corridor. Further construction updates and lane closure alerts can be found at HRBTexpansion.org.

Before heading out, drivers are reminded to use VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT's 511Virginia.org website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
