City of Reno to Host Annual Rose Pruning Demonstration Saturday March 30

The City of Reno Parks Department is inviting all residents to its annual Rose Pruning Demonstration this Saturday, March 30, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. From learning the pruning needs of individual rose types to the best time of year to prune, those who attend this free class will understand the basics of roses during the spring planting and pruning season.

"We are excited to teach our community on the art of maintaining roses," said Ryan Sharrer, the City's Horticulturist. "Whether they're in a person's front yard, or in a public space, beautiful rose bushes benefit the entire community."

Participants are asked to bring gloves and sharp bypass pruners to the event. Consulting rosarians from the American Rose Society and the City of Reno Horticulturist will be on hand to answer questions on all aspects of rose culture and pruning.

The City is also in need of volunteers for the 2024 spring and summer seasons to help prune and maintain the Reno Municipal Rose Garden's 1500+ rose bushes. Volunteers currently help the City Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.; however, if a volunteer becomes credentialed and obtains an official badge, they can volunteer when convenient.

"They only thing our volunteers need is a desire to help and learn about rose care," said Nathan Ullyot, Director of Parks and Recreation. "The Rose Garden is such a special place and it's all because of our amazing volunteers."
