Educate Maine, MMSA Partner on Impactful C/S Learning Project

Educate Maine is pleased to partner with the Maine Math and Science Alliance on a program to make computer science education more accessible in Maine. The STEM Workforce Ready Project 2030 will train 1,000 educators and reach nearly 20,000 students across the state over the next five years.

An incredible $8.2 million awarded to MMSA from the Harold Alfond Foundation will make the work possible.

"We hope that this project will help ensure that emerging opportunities in computer science, at Maine's higher education institutions and throughout the state's workforce, will be accessible to all Maine students and graduates," said Greg Powell, CEO and chairman of the board of trustees for HAF.

Educate Maine's Project>Login will work closely with MMSA on specific projects, including this year's edition of CS Summer of Fun, a weeklong opportunity for educators to network and learn more about how they can incorporate CS learning into their classrooms and curricula. Educate Maine is also organizing trips for teachers to visit employers around the state and hear from business leaders about the qualities and skills they require from job applicants. For Project>Login, it's all about access and closing the equity gaps in education and employment.

Program Director Angela Oechslie told the Bangor Daily News that access to computer science in K-12 classrooms "levels the playing field for students, increases their confidence, and gives them a pathway to good jobs in Maine."
