ALEXANDRIA, Va., (April 26, 2024)-This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its final rule updating nutrition standards for school meals. The final rule calls for added sugars to be restricted in school meals and sodium content to be reduced. The rule also encourages more whole grains, fruits and vegetables and local farm fresh and culturally appropriate foods in school meals across the country. National PTA President Yvonne Johnson issued the following statement on the final rule:

"Proper nutrition is imperative for children's health, development and academic achievement, and for far too many children, school meals are a necessity. Ensuring students have access to healthy meals in school is critical to their success both in and out of the classroom. The final rule is a significant step in continuing the improvement of school meals and helping provide the foundation children need to learn and thrive. National PTA applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture for releasing the final rule while also providing the flexibility, support and technical assistance schools need for their meal programs to be successful in the long run.

"National PTA and PTA members nationwide have long advocated to make sure all children have access to nutritious food options in schools. PTA members and families have also played an important role in helping schools implement improved meal and snack offerings and address food insecurity. Our association remains committed to working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, school communities and their nutrition departments in supporting progress towards healthier school meals for all students to help ensure their health and well-being."
