Fleet Services Wins Local Mechanics Competition

Published on October 07, 2022

Earlier this month, Public Works Fleet Services division members traveled to the City of Olathe to compete against other cities in the annual American Public Works Association's Fleet Technician Rodeo. Team members competed against others from Olathe, Lawrence, Lee's Summit, Shawnee, and Independence.

The rodeo is a skills-based challenge where participants diagnose and resolve complex fleet-related technical issues on vehicles and equipment. This year, Public Works' Fleet Team used their technical expertise to take first and second place, beating out last year's winning team from Lenexa.

"I believe this success is a great example of the caliber of talent we already have within the Unified Government. When leadership truly believes in our employees, and empowers each one to be part of their bright future, we as an organization build a strong culture of professionalism that our community benefits from," said Public Works' Fleet Manager, Jeff Miles. "These Fleet members competed against some of the top technicians within the KC Metro area and came out ahead. Their colleagues, family members, and community are very proud of them."

The Fleet Services team coordinates the maintenance and operation of more than 1,300 cars, trucks, commercial construction equipment, tractors, trailers, and emergency vehicles operated by the Sheriff's Office & the Police Department. More than 30 people are involved in equipment repairs, engine overhauls, and maintenance like tune-ups, brake jobs, clutch and transmission repair & replacement, electrical system diagnostics, hydraulic system repair, and tire maintenance. Fleet keeps numerous departments rolling 24/7!

Congratulations to Jon Chamberlin (1st Place), Andrew Wainscott (2nd Place), Nick Quiroz, Marco Sanchez-Gonzalez, Bobby Henson, Rane Stone, and the entire Fleet team on their win!
