TERRE HAUTE, Indiana -
The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team (12-11, 8-4 MVC) scored a 56-46 victory over Indiana State (8-14, 6-5 MVC) on Friday night as the Panthers completed the season sweep over the Sycamores. UNI led by as much as 19 points in the third quarter after going on a 22-0 run, but the Sycamores cut the deficit to one possession with 2:34 remaining in the game. UNI regained control of the contest down the stretch, after scored six points to seal UNI's 56-46 road win. With the victory, the Panthers improved to 12-11 overall and 7-4 in MVC play, while the Sycamores dropped to 8-14 overall and 6-5 in the league. UNI has now won six of its last eight games, while the loss for INS snaps a five-game winning streak. Kirkpatrick led the Panthers with 18 points, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. and joined Kirkpatrick in double-figures, after scoring 15 and 11 respectively. For Maahs, the 15-point, 11-rebound performance marked her ninth double-double of the season. The Panthers dominated the glass, outrebounding the Sycamores 48-31. Most of that was due to great stops on defense, after holding INS to just 28.6% from the floor and hauling in 36 defensive rebounds. Despite a slow start by both squads on Friday night, the Sycamores rode an early wave of momentum to earn a two-point advantage after the first period. Five quick points from Maahs erased the early deficit for UNI to open the second quarter as the Panthers jumped ahead 17-14. The Sycamores answered back with a 6-0 run to counter, as INS once again regained the lead. Trailing 20-17, the Panthers imposed their will on the Sycamores as UNI sprinted out to a 16-0 run to close out the quarter. The run was spurred on by Panther veterans Howell Kirkpatrick as the two combined for 12 of the 17 points to give UNI control of the contest. Coming out of the break, the Panthers picked up right where they left off as UNI built its run to 22-0 before the Sycamores finally scored to snap a 12-minute scoring drought. INS flipped momentum back to the home team, as the Sycamores held the Panthers only nine points and 25.0% shooting from the floor. INS outscored UNI 15-9 to close the gap to only seven points entering the fourth quarter. The Sycamores would trim the deficit to just three points with 2:34 remaining, before Kirkpatrick drove to the basket for a crucial layup with 1:45 left to give UNI a five-point lead. The Panthers sunk seven clutch shots from the charity stripe in the closing seconds to follow, as UNI sealed the 56-46 victory.
The Panthers seek a weekend sweep as UNI heads south to Evansville for a Sunday tilt against the Purple Aces at 1 p.m. CT.
