MONOPOLI, April 19, 2023 - Work has entered the final phase at the site of the Monopoli-Fasano Hospital, a new hub of excellence in health services for southern Italy, being built by Webuild in Puglia. Visited today by Michele Emiliano, President of the Region of Puglia, the project is expected to be completed by the end of July. So far, work has reached 82%. With work completed on the hospital's structure exteriors, the focus shifts to the interiors, the finishings and systems.

"The new Monopoli hospital was a project that began just four years ago. It is the first of the new hospitals that we are building across Puglia. I hope that it will become operational as soon as possible. It is a great hospital, located in a Puglia landscape under the hills of Monopoli in an area of centuries-old olive trees. It will become a point of reference for the entire region," said Emiliano during a visit.

The hospital will boost the capacity of hospital services offered in the region to the benefit of 260,000 potential users from Fasano and Monopoli, as well as towns near Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. Commissioned by ASL Bari, the local health services entity, and the Puglia Region, the hospital will have 299 beds and nine operating rooms. It will offer all the main medical and surgical specialties; intensive care, ambulance and diagnostic services; and emergency and helicopter services. It will cover a surface area of 178,000 square metres. There is also a kindergarten planned for children of employees.

Built in collaboration with architect Albert De Pineda, it was conceived as a hospital in a park, located in an area full of olive trees so it blends with the surrounding environment.

The avantgarde structure was built according to the principles of energy efficiency and sustainability in order to reduce the hospital's carbon footprint in a substantial way. The use of sustainable technology and innovative materials is present in the installation of solar panels, the combining of traditional and modern materials (stone, wood and steel), the use of artisan work but at the level of industrial production.

The hospital's systems were inspired by solid criteria for energy saving, with the use of eco-compatible materials and, when possible, from the local area. The construction and technological solutions applied to the project were developed to improve energy efficiency, such as energy production at a highly efficient level with the use of renewable energy, the reuse of rainwater for irrigation, and the flexible regulation of the systems inside the hospital.

The installation of solar panels will allow for the saving of 30% of electricity consumption and the system to capture and reuse rainwater will allow for saving 50% of potable water for irrigation and sanitary services.

Webuild is firmly committed to southern Italy. It is working on 16 projects that involve approximately 4,400 people, directly and indirectly. More than 3,800 suppliers are also working on the projects. Among them are four sections of the high-speed/high-capacity railway between Naples and Bari (Naples-Cancello, Apice-Hirpinia, Hirpinia-Orsara, Orsara-Bovino). The railway will reduce travel times between the Campania and Puglia regions. There are also four sections of the rail line running between Palermo, Catania and Messina (Bicocca-Catenanuova, Nuova Enna-Dittaino, Fiumefreddo-Taormina/Letojanni, Taormina-Giampilieri). At the bottom of the peninsula, there is the Maxi Lot 3 on the SS-106 Ionian state road connecting the coasting areas of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia.
