Pair of Awards to Enhance University Programs

The first, via a federal appropriations bill for higher education that recently passed the Senate, will provide $300,000 for UHart to use for its Pathways to Teacher Certification program. In a letter from Connecticut's United States Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, the University was informed that President Joe Biden signed the bill and that plans are underway to complete the process so that the funds can make their way to the UHart campus in the near future.
In addition, the University has received a $500,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) to use for career development projects, scholarships, tutoring area high school students, and several additional programs.
State Senator Doug McCrory '88, M'95 was instrumental in securing the DECD grant, which will also provide compensation for students who assist area businesses. Each year, through the Upper Albany Main Street initiative, UHart students gain valuable entrepreneurial experience assisting small businesses through supervised micro business incubator consulting projects. This grant will further support this important community revitalization organization, part of the Barney School of Business.
The funds will also support Weaver High School, providing tutoring to students throughout the year. Weaver students will have direct access to UHart through campus tours and workshops provided by the Office of Admission. The University will also provide space on campus for their summer youth programs.
