2024 Mayor's Environmental Stewardship Award winners

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The City of Fayetteville is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Mayor's Environmental Stewardship Award:

  • Will Dockery (individual)
  • Butterfield Trail Village (nonprofit)
  • Pick Me Up program (community initiative)
  • Fayetteville High School (FHS) Eco-Fashion Club (young innovators)

Award recipients were recognized by Mayor Lioneld Jordan during the City's Earth Day Celebration held Saturday, April 20, at the Marion Orton Recycling Center.

This is the fourth year for the Mayor's Environmental Stewardship Award, which recognizes excellence in environmental stewardship demonstrated through sustainable practices, programs or projects undertaken by Fayetteville community members, non-profits, businesses and educators.

Will Dockery - A member of the Urban Forestry Advisory Board, Will worked on amendments to the City's tree and landscape codes to increase tree protections and strengthen landscaping standards. He was responsible for the development and implementation of the City's invasive species "bounty" program, and his advocacy for Lewis Park was instrumental in its preservation.

Butterfield Trail Village - In 2021, residents Dennis Nelson and Roy Penny expanded the retirement community's recycling program and formed a Recycling Steering Committee to engage residents and develop and test new collection methods, resulting in an innovative approach that can be replicated at other multi-family housing developments across Fayetteville.

Pick Me Up - In 2022, the City partnered with Genesis Church to develop a litter abatement and bridge-to-work program that employs members of the unsheltered community to clean trails around Fayetteville. Along with collecting 140,000 pounds of trash in 2023, the program has been instrumental in connecting people to the environment while providing job skills and resources to Fayetteville's most vulnerable residents.

FHS Eco-Fashion Club - In 2020, a group of 15 Fayetteville High School students started the Eco-Fashion Club with the purpose of educating the school and larger community on sustainable clothing and housewares, and how "fast fashion" has negative impacts on the environment. The Club developed actionable steps for individuals to minimize waste. Over the last four years, the club has grown to over 60 members.
