IDB, Partners Lead UN 2023 Water Sessions on Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean

Most important event on water and sanitation in a generation to explore water's importance to sustainable development and the future of our planet.

The United Nations General Assembly, with support from the Governments of the Netherlands and Tajikistan, will convene at the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York from March 22 to 24. This conference aims to raise awareness of the global water crisis and decide on concerted action to achieve the internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The conference will launch the Water Action Agenda as a main outcome, which represents the voluntary commitments at all levels, including by governments, institutions, and local communities. This agenda will help mobilize action by governments, sectors, and stakeholders to meet the global water-related goals and targets.

Together with FEMSA Foundation, One Drop Foundation and the Stockholm International Water Institute, the partners of Source of Innovation and Lazos de Agua Program, the IInter-American Development Bank (IDB) is coordinating two events at the UN 2023 Water Conference in a hybrid online/in-person format:

Be the drop that shapes the wave
Thursday, March 23, 2023 - 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. (ET)
In this session, artists from Latin America and New York and actors from various sectors will present a water-themed art installation. This social art project fosters engagement and ownership within the community, as seen in the Lazos de Agua program, an initiative that has already benefitted more than 235,000 Latin Americans through water and sanitation and is on its way to impacting many more. The installation inspires deep reflection on our relationship with water by recognizing the power of individuals to create and shape a water secure future.

In this showcase, the commitment to work towards a global call to action to promote rural water, sanitation and hygiene services is announced, led by the Inter-American Bank in conjunction with the Asian Bank, the African Development Bank, the Council of African Ministers on Water, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, in partnership with Sanitation and Water for All and the Rural Water Supply Network, representing governments and civil society.

Source of Innovation: Accelerating SDG 6
Friday, March 24, 2023 - 8:00 - 9:15 a.m. ET and 6:15 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (ET)
The innovation can catalyze a transformative change in the water and sanitation sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. This session will focus on sharing interactive tools and explore what it is required to turn innovation into action. In addition, participants will analyze the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and institutions, and define strategies to apply and scale up innovations, as well as reflect on how to overcome obstacles and gaps and discuss the success factors that can allow innovation to be replicated and extended.

During the showcase, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the IDB and the World Meteorological Organization to promote programs and projects that foster cooperation, and to support investments and resource planning for water security in emerging markets and developing economies across the region by improving access to quality data, information and technical capacity.
