The Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) and Henry County Stormwater Management will be hosting the annual Henry County Rivers Alive cleanup on Friday October 4, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Authority's Gardner Reservoir on Indian Creek Road in Locust Grove.
The theme of the annual river cleanup is: "Be the solution to water pollution!" Participating organizations joining HCWA employees for the event will include volunteers from Atlanta Motor Speedway, Henry County Fire Department, and Henry County Leadership Academy.
Henry County Rivers Alive is an official event of the Georgia Rivers Alive Campaign, which is Georgia's Annual Waterway Cleanup targeting creeks, streams, rivers, lakes/reservoirs, beaches, and wetlands across the state. The mission of Georgia Rivers Alive is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources.
The site of this year's river cleanup - the HCWA Gardner Reservoir - is one of five drinking water reservoirs owned and operated by the HCWA, which allow the utility to provide clean, safe drinking water to more than 70,000 water customers.
Volunteers should bring heavy-duty work gloves, a source of hydration, sunscreen, and insect repellant. They should also consider wearing long pants and a long-sleeve shirt, covered shoes or boots, and a hat. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, with a parent or guardian present if they are younger than 16. All volunteers must sign a waiver.
"It's always great to leave something better than how you found it, especially when it comes to our water source," says Lindsey Sanders, HCWA Communications and Regulatory Coordinator. "Rivers Alive gives everyone the opportunity to do just that and be intentional in preserving our environment. We're looking forward to another great cleanup."
