The Next Wilmington Art Loop 2022 Opens This Friday, October 7

Twenty-four venues located in and around Wilmington will participate

Resiliency by Stephen Kingsberry

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, City Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, and Jerry duPhily of Out & About Magazine invite City residents and art lovers from around the region to the next Art Loop Wilmington on Friday, October 7. The popular FREE art exhibition, now in its 34th year, is a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and Out & About. Galleries in Downtown Wilmington and along the Christina Riverfront will participate in this month's Art Loop, and a complete list can be found in the October issue of Out and About.

Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of the Art Loop shuttle provided by the City of Wilmington Parks & Recreation Department. The shuttle will leave the parking lot of The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, at 5:45 p.m. In addition to the featured venues, shuttle riders vote for their choice of galleries to visit.
Wilmington's Redding Gallery, located at 800 North French Street, continues to present Resiliency: Ductile People by artist Stephen Kingsberry. A resident of Hockessin, Kingsberry studied art at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, N.Y. His brilliant copper work seeks to inform about the struggles of people around the world, to highlight racial oppression and discrimination, and to promote the beauty, rich heritage, and tradition of Africa and its people throughout the world.

Also in The Redding Gallery is Art Works for All's annual Celebration of Creativity (COC) exhibition, which presents artwork created by individuals with disabilities. The artists, primarily K-12 students, created this artwork during unique arts education programming facilitated by Art Works for All (formerly VSA Delaware), a non-profit arts education organization dedicated to providing artistic opportunities for individuals with disabilities. During Art Works for All programs, participants can experience an integrated curriculum that provides arts instruction, as well as opportunities for self-expression and communication. The annual COC exhibition debuts each May at the Arts Center/Gallery at Delaware State University, and then travels to various sites throughout the state.
The Redding Gallery will host a reception on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with light refreshments.

The other featured establishments in October include The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, Howard Pyle Studio, and 2nd & LOMA. In addition, this Friday you're invited to take part in the first-ever Art Loop Scavenger Hunt in the Trolley Square section of the City!

The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building at 820 North French Street, is pleased to present 2022 DDOA Individual Artist Fellow Joseph Barbaccia 's exhibition, Polymer Paintings, running from October 7 to 28, 2022.

Joseph Barbaccia

All his life, Joseph Barbaccia has been inspired by color and form. He was drawn to their motivating force even before his artistic inclinations and aspirations were clear to him. The prolific artist has exhibited widely - over 35 group shows and 10 solo exhibitions - in galleries and major venues throughout the East Coast and the mid-Atlantic, including the Greater Reston Art Center, Delaware Contemporary, Rehoboth Art League, and Washington's Corcoran Gallery. He's been the subject of dozens of articles and reviews, both as an artist and as an illustrator with three published children's picture books (and a fourth underway). Born in Philadelphia and raised in New Hersey, Barbaccia and his wife have lived in Georgetown, Delaware, since 2018.

The Mezzanine Gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guests are invited to attend a Meet-the-Artist Reception on Friday, October 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Music of the Night by Doris Davis-Glackin

Howard Pyle Studio, at 1305 North Franklin Street, invites you to a retrospective show of Doris Davis-Glackin, along with work by Members of the Studio Group, on Friday, October 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Live music will be provided on Friday evening by Caroline Stephenson and Cesar Colmenares. Doris Davis-Glackin, who died in January, was a long-time member of the Howard Pyle Studio Group. Her watercolor paintings received numerous awards and are exhibited in museums and colleges throughout the United States, China, and Spain.

Infinite Poppies by Amy Nitchman

2nd & LOMA Leasing Office, located at 211 North Market Street, invites you to view the work of Amy Nitchman, an artist who specializes in very textured acrylic painting. Most of her work is on gallery grade stretched, framed canvas using various forms of mediums to create a thick, 3-D type of visual experience. Mediums she employs include heavy body acrylics, modeling paste, and heavy gels, which are applied in layers taking days to fully dry. Most of Nitchman's pieces center around landscapes, flowers, trees, and oceans. You are Invited to a special Art Loop Happy Hour on Friday, October 7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with live steel drum music provided by Trevor Stubbs.

Gogh Trolley Square by Karen Yarnell

Finally, you are invited to take part in the Trolley Square Art Murals Scavenger Hunt. Find the 18 Trolley Square Murals between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to enter a drawing for prizes. Stop by the Howard Pyle Studio at 1305 North Franklin Street, the Delaware Center for Horticulture at 1810 North DuPont Street, or the Blue Streak at 1721 Delaware Avenue to get your scavenger hunt map of the mural locations and entry form for the prize drawing. Prize drawings from the completed entries will be at 8:30 p.m. at Piccolina Toscana Bar & Lounge, located at 1412 North DuPont Street.

Eighteen artists -- all from New Castle County, Delaware, and many from the City of Wilmington -- took the challenge of turning dirty and graffiti-covered utility boxes into beautiful public art. More than 80 artists submitted over 100 designs from which the 18 designs were selected by a committee. Many of the artists will be available at their mural during the scavenger hunt.

The FREE event draws local and regional art lovers to the Downtown District and greater Wilmington area on the first Friday of the month except for Independence Day Weekend in July. Many venues offer opportunities to meet the featured artists while patrons enjoy refreshments, and, in some cases, live entertainment is scheduled.
Art Loop Wilmington's website - a hand-held guide to the Loop that is easily navigable by gallery location, artist, or type of venue - is mobile friendly and features the monthly lineup at least two weeks prior to the start of each Art Loop. The site can be accessed at www.artloopwilmington.org. People can also join the conversation on social media by using #ArtLoopWilm or visit the Facebook Page. The next Art Loop will take place on Friday, November 4, 2022.
