City Marks 30th Arbor Day with Tree Planting at Milton High School

The City of Milton commemorated its 30th Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony at Milton High School. A 3-foot caliper live oak, locally sourced from Panhandle Growers, was planted on the east side of the campus near the anchor along Stewart Street.

Arbor Day was first proposed in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture. Since then, it has grown into a global celebration that emphasizes the crucial role of trees in environmental conservation and community enhancement. The first event alone resulted in over a million trees being planted in Nebraska, establishing a tradition of annual celebrations.

Each Arbor Day underscores the significant benefits of tree planting, which include:

  • Reducing topsoil erosion;
  • Cleansing the air and producing oxygen;
  • Enhancing water quality in rivers, creeks, and ponds;
  • Increasing property values, improving urban climates, and beautifying communities.
