Ireland 'over the moon' with promotion push

Ireland clinched a place in the Davis by Rakuten World Group II Play-offs after taking the third and final promotion spot from Europe Group III with a 2-1 win over Georgia on Saturday.

The Irish went behind 1-0 after Aleksandre Bakshi defeated Osgar O'Hoisin 6-4 6-3, but Simon Carr maintained his perfect performance in singles this week with a 6-2 6-2 triumph over Aleksandre Metreveli to force a deciding doubles.

Carr and David O'Hare stepped up to deliver a 6-3 6-1 victory over Bakshi and Zura Tkemaladze to secure the men in green's place in the World Group II Play-offs - much to the delight of stand-in skipper Cian Blake.

'We're over the moon,' he said. 'The last time we went to World Group II, it was by default. So getting promoted by right, on court, is fantastic.

'I'm really proud of the team. They are warriors.'

In Saturday's other ties, Luxembourg secured their place in Group III and relegated Iceland to Group IV with a 2-0 victory over the Scandinavians.

Meanwhile Monaco, who had already secured promotion, finished top of Group III this year with a 2-1 win over Cyprus, who also booked their place in the World Group II Play-offs on Friday.
