Muskingum University Music Department Presents Spring Band Concert

The Muskingum University Music Department will present a spring band concert on Sunday, April 28 at 7 p.m. in Brown Chapel. The concert will feature the Muskingum University Wind Ensemble and Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds performing a program of diverse repertoire and composers. Featured soloist on the program will be Jim Lindroth, Muskingum Instructor of Percussion, who will perform Ney Rosauro's Concerto No. 1 for Vibraphone and Wind Ensemble. Professor Lindroth will also be play Steel Pan on Omar Thomas' Caribana Afterparty, which explores soca and calypso music of the Caribbean. In addition, Dr. Daniel Strychacz, Muskingum Director of Choral Activities will guest conduct a transcription of Franz Biebl's Ave Maria.

Also featured on the concert will be the inaugural performance of the Muskingum Valley Youth Wind Ensemble, an ensemble comprised of high school students from 16 high schools throughout our region. Students were nominated by their high school band directors and have been rehearsing all semester. The youth wind ensemble will perform a wide variety of selections including Gustav Holst's Second Suite in F for Military Band and Shenandoah, composed by Omar Thomas, among other works. Designed to provide high school instrumentalists with additional performance opportunities, the youth wind ensemble also gives opportunities for Muskingum students to hone their music teaching and conducting skills. The Muskingum Valley Youth Wind Ensemble has received funding from the Muskingum County Community Youth Foundation.

The concert will culminate with all musicians combining to perform a grand finale, Konigsmarsch, by Richard Strauss.

The concert is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted at the door. The concert will be conducted by Dr. David Turrill, Muskingum University Director of Bands.
