Contraband cigarettes seized in Campbellton region

FREDERICTON (GNB) - Peace officers from the Department of Justice and Public Safety recently seized more than 38,000 contraband cigarettes in the Campbellton area.

Between May 16-18, a 70-year-old woman from Trudel, a 35-year-old man from Canterbury, a 51-year-old man from Bathurst and a 57-year-old woman from Edmundston (Saint-Basile area) were charged. They will appear in court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing.

The tobacco seized has a provincial tax value of $9,709 and a federal excise tax value of $6,023.

Residents are encouraged to report the trafficking of contraband tobacco, or any other criminal matter, to law enforcement.
