UK Music Gives Music Lecturers Opportunity To Meet Authors Of Teaching Resources Book

15.11.2023: Music lecturers from UK Music's Music Academic Partnership (MAP) were given the opportunity to meet with the authors of The Essential Handbook for Musicians Who Teach - A Practical Guide For Instrumental and Singing Teachers.

On Monday November 13, as part of Discover Creative Careers Week, Essential Handbook authors Dr Kerry Boyle, singing teacher, choral director, researcher and lecturer based in Canterbury and Diane Widdison, professional flautist, instrumental teacher, conductor, manager and former National Organiser for Education and Training at the Musicians' Union met with MAP members to discuss the book, their careers, and offer advice on how to further encourage students to become music teachers.

The pair were motivated to write the book after realising that although teaching is an important part of the portfolio career of many of those involved in the music industry there was actually not many relevant resources available for those who didn't have formal training in education to draw on.

The Essential Handbook provides an accessible guide to those who are already teaching or wanting to teach and contains a wealth of practical advice and information. It covers a comprehensive range of topics from employment status, safeguarding and health and well-being to planning, teaching strategies and continuing professional development.

In this presentation for MAP members Kerry and Diane provided an overview of each of the subjects covered in the book and looking at how students wanting to go into teaching can best be supported in this work.
