SBU President Discusses NSF Funding Concerns and SBU Cutting-edge Research with NSF Director

On March 25, Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis met with National Science Foundation (NSF) Director Sethuraman Panchanathan at NSF headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. During the meeting, McInnis expressed deep concern regarding the FY2024 federal appropriations funding provided for NSF and what it means for America's future.

"I am very concerned that the FY24 budget would reduce NSF's capacity by almost $500M. Insufficient funding for NSF negatively impacts discovery and innovation, compromising universities like Stony Brook that conduct innovative life-changing research. Robust funding for NSF and related opportunities to invest in our nation's future will continue to be a top priority during my meetings with the New York congressional delegation in April," said McInnis.

Earlier this month, McInnis sent a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer detailing concerns in the lack of appropriate NSF FY24 funding, requesting the Senator's leadership to fully fund the promises made in the CHIPS and Science Act and his support to ensure that Congress makes up for NSF's FY24 deficit in FY25.

Additionally, McInnis and Panchanathan discussed Stony Brook's innovative NSF-funded research, including recent advancements in quantum computing and AI. The two leaders also emphasized the importance of workforce development, transformative educational science programming, and growing America's bioeconomy. Stony Brook's Office of Federal Relations located in Washington, DC, coordinated this meeting and works closely with SBU leadership, faculty, staff and students to advance SBU's federal priorities.
