Risch, Cardin Lead Colleagues in Introducing Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing U.S.-Japan Alliance, Welcome Prime Minister Kishida to the U.S.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), ranking member and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah), chairman and ranking member of the SFRC Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) introduced a bipartisan resolution underscoring the strength and importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Introduced in advance of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida's official state visit to Washington this week, this bipartisan resolution reaffirms the vital role the U.S.-Japan alliance plays as a cornerstone for peace, security, and prosperity and underscores the unwavering commitment of the United States to Japan and the Indo-Pacific region.

"Japan is a leader in the world and a strong and steadfast ally of the United States. Japan's support for Ukraine under Prime Minister Kishida shows its willingness to step up as we face a difficult geopolitical environment," said Ranking Member Risch. "I also applaud growing trilateral cooperation by the United States and Japan with South Korea and the Philippines. I welcome Prime Minister Kishida to the United States and to Congress, and look forward to deepening cooperation in defense, economic security, and many other areas."

The bipartisan resolution:

• Reaffirms the United States' extended deterrence commitments to Japan;
• Commits to strengthening and deepening U.S.-Japan diplomatic, economic, security, and people-to-people ties;
• Acknowledges that 2024 marks the 64^th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security Between the United States and Japan;
• Applauds Japan's recent historic steps to modernize its national security and defense policy, including its commitments to increase defense spending;
• Celebrates and encourages continued close coordination between the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan to address shared challenges;
• Recognizes Japan for its strong leadership as the G7 host nation in 2023; and
• Recognizes Japan's strong and unwavering support for Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion.
