Chair Cardin Statement on Ugandan Constitutional Court Decision Upholding Anti-Homosexuality Act

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after the Ugandan Constitutional Court ruled to leave the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act largely in place.

"I am deeply troubled by the news that the Anti-Homosexuality Act remains largely intact, including a provision imposing the death penalty. While the Constitutional Court struck several sections, the law still contains provisions which will in effect make some Ugandans second class citizens when it comes to legal and constitutional protections. The human rights of all people in Uganda-including LGBT+ individuals-to live free from violence and discrimination, must be protected."
