Bangor, ME - Today,U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the grand opening ceremony for the Bangor Area Transit Center. The new hub is part of a large-scale remodel of Pickering Square and will include an indoor waiting area, administrative space, public bathrooms, a room for the bus drivers, and a security room. The exterior features covered waiting areas, outdoor seating, lighting and accessible passenger loading areas.

"It was a pleasure to join the community in celebrating this significant milestone in the great city I am proud to call home. Bangor's leaders, the Maine Department of Transportation, and the Federal Transit Administration worked together to make this new transportation center possible," said Senator Collins. "The Community Connector is a great success story in public transit. I congratulate the City of Bangor and the neighboring communities on this achievement, and I look forward to our continued work together."

The Bangor Area Transit Center will serve as the central bus hub for the transit system and is the first upgrade since Bangor's bus depot was first built in 1989. The Community Connector services Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Hampden, Old Town, Veazie, and the University of Maine.

As the Ranking Member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Collins secured a total of $6.5 million in federal funding to support construction of the new Transit Center as well as to improve the Community Connector system through the purchase of new buses and the construction of bus shelters.
