City Uses Interactive Maps to Gather Economic Mobility Data

The City's Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HND) is participating in an interactive online map project designed to pinpoint long-term challenges and opportunities in affordable homeownership, healthcare and education.

Access the maps by clicking on links in this Short Guide to the Interactive GIS Maps. You will be able to compare different metrics from broadband access and health outcomes to housing costs, down to the level of a census tract, all tailored to Greensboro's specific needs.

HND contracted with Winston-Salem State University's Center for the Study of Economic Mobility (CSEM) to produce the maps. City staff will soon schedule training opportunities for residents and community partners through Equitable Development Data Insight Training, in cooperation with the University of California at Berkley and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

"This is a win-win partnership. CSEM presents the information in a user-friendly format, creating the potential to transform and empower our neighborhoods for long-term success," said Eunika Smalls, HND's assistant director for finance and administration, who has spearheaded the project from the City's end.

According to CSEM Director Craig Richardson, these maps help assist with potential policy solutions for Greensboro and its communities that hone in on housing affordability.

Key to this project is an Opportunity Index that reports four components: prosperity, housing, education and health indices for each neighborhood. Users can click on one of those topics, hover over different areas of the city to see specific statistics, and then compare data with other areas of the city.

"As a data informed organization, the City seeks to equip all stakeholders with information that empowers the user with information to make informed decisions," said Smalls.
