Abengoa, finalist in the Global Water Intelligence 2023 Awards

March 24, 2023

  • The Taweelah desalination plant, which Abengoa is developing in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), opts to become the desalination plant of the year in the Global Water Awards.
  • The organization highlighted that "the Taweelah desalination plant represents a landmark step towards decarbonizing the emirate's historically thermally-driven desalination portfolio."

March 24, 2023 - Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, has been shortlisted in the Global Water Awards, organized by the prestigious water sector publication, Global Water Intelligence (GWI). Specifically, Abengoa has been nominated in the category of desalination plant of the year for the Taweelah project, located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates, UAE).

The organization highlighted the following about the Taweelah desalination plant: "it represents a landmark step towards decarbonizing the emirate's historically thermally-driven desalination portfolio. The new IWP, which uses a solar

photovoltaic plant to supply more than 30 % of its energy, will reduce Abu Dhabi's carbon footprint by 2.5 million tons CO2e per year, marking the dawn of a new era of environmentally sustainable desalination in the emirate."

At the same time, the Taweelah project is a benchmark from a financial point of view. As announced by Global Water Intelligence, "by leveraging the benefits of co-located solar power generation, the development team was able to overcome the challenge of comparatively high energy prices in Abu Dhabi and deliver water below $0.50/m3. Taweelah is also the world's first desalination project to hold a "sustainable loan" qualification."

Taweelah thus opts to become the desalination plant of the year. It will be put to a vote starting next Monday, March 27. The winners will be announced in May, during the Global Water Summit gala.

Taweelah, the world's largest desalination plant

Taweelah is the world's largest reverse osmosis desalination plant with a capacity of 909,218 m3/day (phase 1 + phase 2) and the first to combine drinking water production with clean energy generation. Located in the Taweelah power and water generation complex, 45 km north of Abu Dhabi, the plant is about to complete the commissioning phase of its phase 2, to start commercial operation.

The Taweelah desalination plant has been designed to ensure the supply of Abu Dhabi City (approximately four and a half million people) for an entire year and will be the first large-scale desalination plant in the emirate to combine the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a photovoltaic solar field with a capacity of more than 70 MWp. In this way, once in commercial operation, the desalination plant's energy demand will be reduced in a sustainable manner. In addition, this project, located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, is part of the plan developed by the government of the United Arab Emirates to encourage private participation in the development of the country's infrastructures.

Abengoa's scope of work at the Taweelah plant has included the design, engineering, supply of the main equipment, supervision of assembly, commissioning, start-up of the reverse osmosis and post-treatment systems and advice on the pre-treatment processes carried out by third parties. All in all, the Taweelah desalination plant meets each one of the drinking water parameters required by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, including hardness, alkalinity, LSI (Langelier Saturation Index), SDI (Siltz density Index), ph and Boron content.
