VMware India CodeHouse’22 – An Inside Look!

VMware CodeHouse is an exclusive, invite-only, multi-day coding experience for a select group of women technologists studying computer science/engineering. Attendees work on a real-world project and then present the team's solution to a panel of VMware judges. This program was brought to life last year in India, and recently, we wrapped up the second edition with thirty attendees from numerous Tier 1 engineering colleges across India. In addition to meeting VMware mentors, speakers, and judges, the attendees had the opportunity to hear Kit Colbert - VMware CTO's welcome message for them.

After the event wrapped, we sat down with VMware Emerging Talent Program Manager, Elina Parida, to learn more about this DE&I and STEM Education-focused event.

VMware Careers:Elina, tell us more about this year's VMware India CodeHouse.

Elina Parida: Sure! The project centered around women returning to work after a career break. The participants were tasked with producing a web-based solution to assist women returning to work by suggesting technology reskilling, mapping jobs from the target companies, and highlighting market demands/skills to leverage the opportunity. The different personas interacting with the portal would be candidates and organizations.

VMware Careers:The three-day event ended with attendees presenting their projects to a panel of judges. Tell us about the winners of VMware CodeHouse India and their project.

Elina Parida: The winning team was called HERcules, and included Aneesha Jain from BITS Goa, Anjali Raj from IIT Kharagpur, Priyanshu from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, and Appari Shanti from VNIT Nagpur. Their application portal was titled "WeStart: Restart your Career." It mapped the applicants with suitable jobs in their domain and various mentorship programs and courses available to upskill them. Their projected portal partnered with multiple companies to help these women re-enter the workforce and matched the returnees with the right job per their selected filters. HTML/CSS/JS/Google Apps Script, Database: MongoDB, Express.js, Node.js, and React were some technology stacks used to create the application portal. The future scope of the solution included deploying the application, adding courses directly in the application, assessing and rating the candidates, integrating a platform for online interviews, and the option to add certifications, providing an end-to-end solution.

VMware Careers:What feedback have you been hearing from the students who were a part of this year's CodeHouse in India?

Elina Parida: We asked the attendees to describe their favourite aspect of VMware CodeHouse India 2022, and here are some anonymous responses that we received:

"Codehouse was not only about building technology, but it also taught me the importance of team members and collaboration."

"I loved the professional and positive vibe at VMware. Although the hackathon was tiring, the VMware team never let the participants feel low; they always kept their temperaments high. As a result, I loved every bit of my experience!"

"My favourite part of the event was networking. I made friends from different colleges, one of them being my senior, who also helped me learn many new things. And the experience shared by the mentors was also a valuable takeaway for me."

Elina Parida: I would like to congratulate the winners and all attendees who made VMware CodeHouse India 2022 a remarkable success! We are already looking forward to next year's event.
