New Brunswick agriculture industry records consecutive years of record exports and farm cash receipts

FREDERICTON (GNB) - The province's agriculture industry enjoyed a second straight year of record exports and farm cash receipts.

The sector finished 2023 with more than $1.2 billion in farm cash receipts, up from the previous record of just over $1.1 billion set the year before. Agriculture and agri-food exports totalled $778.4 million in 2023, topping the previous record of $689 million from 2022.

"Farm revenues in New Brunswick have grown at the fastest rate in Canada since 2018," said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Margaret Johnson. "We have also led Atlantic Canada in farm cash receipts since 2017. Although these increased farm revenues help drive local economies, it is also important to note that on-farm expenditures have also been increasing, thereby creating challenges on some farms. My department and I will continue to support the New Brunswickers working in agriculture and agri-food who help feed other New Brunswickers and more than 71 countries around the world."

Some of the strongest growth in farm revenue included a $91 million increase in potato receipts and a $109 million increase in livestock receipts. The sector also experienced revenue growth from floriculture, grains, maple products, vegetables and eggs.

Potatoes and potato products led agriculture and agri-food exports.

Primary agricultural production and agri-food processing activities account for 9,950 full-year equivalent jobs in the province.
