Captain Ron Maass - Operations Division

Captain Harlan 'Ron' Maass began his career with the San Bernardino Police Department in 1995 as a Patrol Officer, after having previously been a Reserve Police Officer with another Southern California agency. In 1997 he was selected as a Field Training Officer assigned to the Patrol Division. He has worked assignments including Problem Oriented Policing, Investigations Liaison Officer, and SWAT. He was promoted to Corporal/Detective in early 2004, assigned to Patrol, and continued to train new officers.

In the fall of 2004, Ron was promoted to Sergeant. At that time he also took over command of the San Bernardino Police Department Honor Guard. During his tenure as a sergeant, he worked as a Patrol sergeant, the Northern District Crime Impact Team (CIT) sergeant, and the Central District Operations sergeant, overseeing the numerous civic events in the city including the annual Route 66 Rendezvous.

In 2009, Ron was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, Ron was assigned as the Northwest District Commander, the Specialized Enforcement Bureau (Vice/Narcotics) Commander, and the Professional Standards Bureau Commander. Ron was also the commander for the department's Mounted Enforcement Detail, Reserve Unit, and the Honor Guard.

In 2014, Ron was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Investigations Division overseeing the Detective Bureau, Gangs, MET, SWAT, Vice, Narcotics, Crime Analysis, Forensics, and Property. He is currently assigned to the Operations Division overseeing Patrol.

Ron has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the Virginia Military Institute, a Master's Degree in Applied Criminology and Police Management from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, and a Juris Doctorate (JD) from the University of La Verne - College of Law. He has been a member of the California State Bar Association since 2001, and is also a member of the Society of Evidence-Based Policing. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, and has a California POST Management certificate.
