Lieutenant General Daniel L. Karbler, U.S. Army (Ret.), Joins CSIS Missile Defense Project

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 25, 2024 - The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced that Lieutenant General Daniel L. Karbler, U.S. Army (retired), has joined CSIS as a non-resident senior adviser with the International Security Program's Missile Defense Project and as a member of the project's advisory board.

Lieutenant General Karbler brings to CSIS expertise and technical insight from over three decades of military service and prominent roles in U.S. missile defense development, integration, and deterrence. His track record of exemplary leadership and innovation will bolster the Missile Defense Project's work across the full range of policy, program, and strategic issues.

Lieutenant General Karbler most recently served as commanding general of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) and Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense (JFCC-IMD). Karbler led the mission change and subsequent stand-up of U.S. Space Command. Prior to serving as commanding general, Lieutenant General Karbler was the chief of staff of the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and principal adviser to the USSTRATCOM commander and deputy commander. In addition, Lieutenant General Karbler served as commanding general of the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command and the director of Joint and Integration, Army G-8 at the Pentagon.

Prior to his work at USSTRATCOM, Lieutenant General Karbler held a variety of other leadership positions. He has commanded both the B Battery and the D Battery in the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, and the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command while assigned to U.S. Army Europe. He began his career in 1987 as second lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery branch and shortly after began working with the then relatively new Patriot surface-to-air missile system.
