Notice to appoint an Administrator in Tsiigehtchic

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) has formally notified the Charter Community of Tsiigehtchic of their opinion that it is in the best interest of the Charter to be under Administration as it transitions to a Hamlet.

This notice provides a 30-day consultation period before Administration would take effect. Under the authority provided in section 161 of the Charter Communities Act, the Minister can release council from their duties and appoint an Administrator.

MACA will continue to provide support to the community government through the various programs and services offered by the department. The Administrator will be focused on preparing the Charter Community for its status change to a Hamlet and developing a plan to provide stability to the community government during this transition period.

Providing this direct support is an important step towards the Government of the Northwest Territories' goal of building stronger relationships with community governments.

Quote(s)

"MACA is committed to supporting the decision of the Charter Community of Tsiigehtchic to change its status to a Hamlet. Appointing an Administrator in Tsiigehtchic is a critical step in helping the community government during this transitional period."

- Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

Quick Facts

  • The Charter Communities Act provides the Minister with the authority to place a community government under administration when it is in the best interest of the Charter Community that it be under the control of a supervisor.
  • The status change will result in two distinct and separate government structures: a Hamlet council and a band council. As a Hamlet, the authority and operations of the community government will be more easily defined and separated, and all residents that are eligible to vote will be able to vote and/or run for Mayor and Councillor positions.
