SWOSU Nursing Achieves 97% NCLEX Pass Rate with Elsevier 360

Elissa Saunders, Chair of the Department of Nursing at SWOSU

At Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), the faculty are the driving forces of progress. Four years ago, they initiated a pivotal shift in the nursing curriculum and technology partnership. After a thorough evaluation, the faculty endorsed Elsevier 360 to the administration, a decision that has proven transformative for the Department of Nursing. Elissa Saunders, MSN, RN, and Chair of the Department of Nursing at SWOSU, emphasized the comprehensive support offered by Elsevier 360. She noted that it was the "total solution package," highlighting its tailored curriculum with NCLEX prep for benchmark testing, educator assistance, and integrated e-books.

With a background in rural and ER nursing, Saunders' dedication to student success fuels her leadership. Since joining SWOSU as an instructor in 2020, when Elsevier 360 was implemented, she has seen the program evolve alongside the curriculum. Saunders has recently been appointed the Chair of the Department of Nursing within the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Through this role, she oversees one in-person BSN program and three online programs for approximately 400 students.

Elsevier 360 is currently being used with the in-person program to support the students and the nine faculty members. As the program expands, Saunders aims to extend its benefits to online students.

Asked about the best way to set students up for success, Saunders says, "Clear communication and meeting expectations. Students get frustrated when, for instance, technology doesn't work like they thought it was going to." SWOSU's experience with Elsevier 360 has been overwhelmingly positive, with virtually all components in use, barring VR goggles.

SWOSU is seeing positive results with the integration of the Elsevier 360 curriculum, especially in the area of NCLEX preparation.

"We jumped from 75% to 97% first-time pass rates-a huge, huge, huge improvement. I was very pleased," said Saunders. "I think that students were definitely more prepared than the previous classes for that NCLEX first attempt. I've asked [students] and they say that the Elsevier program was very helpful in hindsight after they took the NCLEX. It helped them feel very prepared for the style of questions and the stamina that you need for the length of questions and the length of the test that the NCLEX is."

SWOSU's dedication to nursing education excellence stands firm, with student feedback affirming the university's significant progress in shaping future nursing professionals.
