GBI Arrests Lumpkin Man in Stewart County Homicide

Lumpkin, GA (April 29, 2024) - The GBI has arrested and charged Jerrell Staples, age 37, of Lumpkin, GA, with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony in connection to the death of Jason Jones, age 34, of Lumpkin, GA. The Lumpkin Police Department asked the GBI to investigate. Stewart County Sheriff's Office also assisted in the investigation.

Preliminary information indicates on April 29, 2024, at about 12: 15p.m., the Lumpkin Police Department responded to a report of gunshots on the 300 block of Main Street. When officers arrived, they encountered Staples, the owner of the home. In addition, officers found Jones dead in the front yard. Information obtained through interviews revealed there was a fight between Staples and Jones on the front porch of the home that led to the shooting.

Staples was taken to the Randolph County Jail.
