Mayor O'Connell and the Department of Public Works Senior Free Trash Bag Program

The Free Trash Bag Program, initially open only to seniors who qualified through participation in low-income programs, has been expanded to include 6 months of free trash bags for all Taunton seniors age 65 and over.

Please note the original program is still in effect and continues to run as before. The new program reaches a wider section of senior households. Below are the details of the two programs:
  • 6 months worth of free trash bags per household per year eligibility requirements:

    • Taunton Residents 65 years of age or older

    • Living in a single through four-family residence in Taunton

  • 12 months worth of free trash bag per household per year eligibility requirements:

    • Taunton Residents 65 years of age or older

    • Living in a single through four-family residence in Taunton

    • Participate in one of three economic relief programs:

      • City's Senior Tax Exemption Program OR

      • MA Dept. Transitional Assistance Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (MA DTA SNAP) OR

      • MA Dept. Housing & Community Development Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

To apply, residents must complete an application and return it to DPW at 90 Ingell Street: Application
Applicants are required to provide proof of age and residency (valid MA Driver's license, MA State ID card, birth certificate, utility bill, etc.)

For applicants who participate in the City's Senior Tax Exemption program, MA DTA SNAP or LIHEAP, proof of program participation will be required.

Once approved, residents will be responsible for picking up one (1) sleeve of trash bags at DPW per month. Sleeves will only be distributed to the approved resident and identification will be required at time of pick-up.
