Rep. McNerney Introduces Constitutional Amendment to Ban Dark Money Campaign Contributions & Eliminate PACs

Washington, DC -Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09), who has long led the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Caucus and championed solutions throughout the years to help fix our broken campaign finance system, re-introduced a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution to restrict campaign contributions and eliminate Political Action Committees (PACs) and dark money that have undue influence on the outcome of our elections. Additionally, funding for a candidate or ballot measure would be limited to the use of a public financing system or donations given directly to the campaign by individual citizens.

"Americans across the political spectrum agree: we must eradicate the corruptive spending that has been poisoning our political system, placing the demands of special interest over the needs of the majority of people," said Congressman McNerney. "When wealth determines the value of a voice, democracy deteriorates. This Constitutional amendment would return us to a government that is truly by the people and for the people."

The amendment would also give Congress, states, and localities jurisdiction to establish contribution limits, including limits on the amount of money an individual candidate can contribute to their own campaign.
