Yolo County Central Landfill Hosts Earth Day Celebration

PRESS RELEASE

On Saturday, April 20th, the Yolo County Central Landfill (YCCL) at 44090 County Road 28H will host a community event celebrating the 54th Annual Earth Day. The event will be focused on the benefits of reusing and repurposing waste and will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Blue Barn thrift store will have demonstrations on how to upcycle furniture and will be featuring remanufactured paints. The Repair Café and Sacramento Area Bicycle Alliance (SABA) will be onsite to assist with repairs of small appliance and bicycle purchases. Free compost will be available to all Yolo County residents, and a variety of vendors and community partners will be participating.

"Since its establishment in 2016, the Blue Barn thrift store has diverted 1,156,000 lbs. of waste from YCCL and has educated thousands on the benefits of responsible waste management," stated Marissa Juhler, Yolo County Department of Community Services' Integrated Waste Division Director. "The Blue Barn is a model program that supports our greenhouse gas reduction efforts, in addition to serving as a reminder to the public that sustainability is achievable."

Yolo County residents are invited to show their commitment to the environment this Saturday by donating gently used items to the Blue Barn or visiting the thrift store, proceeds will support the county's recycling and composting education programs. The Blue Barn accepts a wide range of items not typically accepted at conventional thrift stores, including books, doors, exercise equipment, housewares, large furniture, lumber, as well as toys, tools/hardware, windows, and more.

In addition to the numerous recycling education programs present, YCCL will be teaching attendees about its collaboration with the Yolo Food Bank on an edible food recovery project. This collaborative initiative intends to address the thousands of pounds of edible food that unnecessarily end up in landfills each year. To support this effort, attendees are encouraged to bring a bag of shelf-stable canned or dry food for donation to the food bank, who will also be teaching residents about how this collaboration furthers environmental stewardship and emphasizes responsible waste management practices among residents.

"We are thrilled to see our mission of nourishing the families and residents of Yolo County aligned with the county's goal of reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill each year," remarked Karen Baker, Executive Director of the Yolo Food Bank. "This Earth Day event provides a perfect opportunity to highlight both programs, and we appeal to your generosity at a time when typical donations are declining."

Additionally, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity for proper hazardous waste disposal, available this Saturday at YCCL, along with the complimentary paint products offered in the shed adjacent to the household hazardous waste facility.
