Owls Drop Opener in ASUN Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. - In a game that saw two lightning delays that totaled over two hours, Kennesaw State baseball dropped its first contest of the ASUN Championship to Lipscomb by a score of 12-10 on Tuesday night at Swanson Stadium. The Owls (32-25, 19-11 ASUN) and the Bisons (35-20, 20-10 ASUN) totaled 28 hits on the night and combined for 22 runs.

In his first at-bat, launched a three-run homer for his 16th of the year to set a new Kennesaw State single-season record. The third baseman ended the night 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Just one day after being named a first-team All-ASUN selection, contributed a 2-for-6 day at the plate. The KSU leadoff hitter recorded his 98th hit on the season which ranks second in the program's Division I record book.

KSU got on the board in the first with a three-run blast from Young. The Lipscomb starter retired the first two batters, but back-to-back walks put men on base for the KSU third baseman. On the second pitch of his at-bat, Young blasted the 1-0 pitch over the right-center wall to put Kennesaw State ahead. One batter later, a Bisons' error scored a run to extend the lead to 4-0.

Lipscomb tied the game in the third, but Hatcher put the Owls back on top with a solo shot off the scoreboard to begin the fourth. The long ball marked the 10th of the season for the KSU center fielder.

With two outs in the fifth, KSU plated its sixth run on a two-out single from Hassan. The Kennesaw State catcher slashed a line drive to right that allowed Young to cross home plate just before was thrown out at third. This moved the advantage to 6-4, Owls.

Lipscomb tied things up once again with a two-run blast from Trace Willhoite. The long ball marked the 12th run scored between the teams in the first five innings.

The game went into the eighth tied at six runs apiece. Lipscomb recorded two quick outs before the Owls' offense exploded for four runs on three consecutive hits. With the bases loaded, took home on a ball that ricocheted only feet away from the Bisons' catcher. This put KSU ahead 7-6 with Hanson at the plate.

On the next pitch, the KSU designated hitter lined a fastball over the left fielder's head for a double that scored two runs. Mimbs followed with a base hit to right that brought home the fourth Owl of the frame and extended the lead to 10-6.

Lipscomb scored five runs in the final frame to earn the comeback victory.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow versus top-seeded Liberty with first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Swanson Stadium.
