Press Release:
Firefighters Called to Kitchen Fire on Davis Street
Syracuse, NY- On Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 5:56 p.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported fire at 219 Davis Street on the City's West Side. Firefighters arrived at the scene in three minutes and found a two-story wood-frame multi-family building with a large amount of thick smoke from the rear of the structure. A signal '99', indicating a working fire, was transmitted.
Two of the three engines dispatched to this call were short of personnel due to EMS calls, so an additional engine was requested. The initial two engines deployed hoses to the rear apartment. Other teams of firefighters searched the entire building for any trapped occupants. The initial engine quickly located and extinguished the fire in the kitchen of the first-floor rear apartment. All searches were completed, and all occupants were able to evacuate prior to the arrival of Fire Department personnel. A third hose line was brought to the second floor to check for any fire extending from the first-floor kitchen. The main body of fire was extinguished in less than ten minutes. After ensuring all hot spots were cooled down, and the structure was checked to ensure there was no hidden fire still burning, the fire was declared out; this took less than twenty minutes from the time of dispatch. Crews remained at the scene for an additional two hours, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.
The building contains three apartments, and the fire occurred in the first-floor rear apartment. That apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage, and other parts of the building suffered smoke damage. Five occupants were displaced by this fire; the Red Cross is assisting them. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined that the fire started in the kitchen of the first-floor rear apartment. The cause is still under investigation. There were no injuries to civilians or to Fire Department personnel. Two dogs died in the fire.
Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, SPD, AMR, National Grid, and the Red Cross.
