An aspiring mathematician has been awarded a coveted award for her academic skills and problem solving from Cambridge University.

Halima Usman, who is studying for her A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Biology and EPQ at Nelson and Colne College, has been presented with a silver award after demonstrating her knowledge as part of a university-led course.

STEM SMART, which stands for STEM Subject Mastery and Attainment Raising Tuition, is a free 16-month support and tuition programme in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics for sixth form students in the UK.

As part of the course, students are supported with their school studies, but are also equipped with extra problem-solving practice and guidance to enable them to achieve well in university entrance tests, university interviews and to make a really good start to their undergraduate studies.

Around 1,000 students were involved in this intake, and Halima, 17, from Nelson, was one of just 374 students who were also invited to the residential event in Cambridge.

To gain a certificate, students needed to engage with all 34 weeks of the programme. This has involved weekly extra questions - many of which develop problem solving techniques which go beyond the requirements of A-level - as well as supporting their learning within the syllabus.

Students typically answer questions each week for each subject in addition to their school homework and attend online tutorials weekly in each subject.Halima has completed more than 2000+ questions for maths, physics and biology collectively on top of her A Level studies. Silver certificates are given to those who have attempted more than 55% of the questions.

Halima was thrilled to be recognised for her commitment to learning.

She said:

"I thoroughly enjoyed the stem smart programme, it was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. The questions set were thought provoking and developed my problem solving, and analytical skills. It was satisfying to get the more challenging questions correct.

"I met some brilliant people on my residential, from different backgrounds, and likeminded individuals which opened my mind."

Throughout her academic journey, Halima Usman has demonstrated exceptional dedication and a strong aptitude for learning. Her consistently high grades and outstanding performance in various assignments highlight her academic excellence.

Halima's tutor, Aqil Javed, from Nelson and Colne College, congratulated Halima on her achievements.

He said:

"We a delighted that Halima's hard work and dedication has been recognised by such a prestigious university. We believe Halima's involvement in the course demonstrates her motivation to study and determination to succeed in her chosen career."

Halima is now part way through Phase 3 - which focuses more on supporting revision and preparation for A-level (or equivalent) examinations.

After her A-Level studies, Halima plans to attend the University Of York to study Mathematics.
