Procession Art Studio Update

The Procession of the Species Celebration takes place during Spring Arts Walk, April 26 & 27.

CREATE! Four new floats are under construction and the Procession crew is looking for a few people who want to get their creative juices going and enjoy working with others to bring these to life, as well as walk with the floats in costume if you wish.

The floats are for Earth, Air, Water and Fire (endangered or threatened species). You can show up at the times listed and the lead person will show you what's needed. For descriptions of the floats, see the free events posted at: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/procession-of-the-species-olympia-2024-3156749 (note there is one luminary class posted with these as well, but it is currently full).

LAST CALL: Eco-poetry reading group with Olympia Poet Laureate, Kathleen Byrd

April 10 Poetry reading group, 4-5:30pm, The Olympia Center Room 103

On the theme of eco-poetry, Olympia Poet Laureate Kathleen Byrd hosts and facilitates a seasonal poetry reading series. Bring a copy of the book noted below (you don't need to read the entire collection, but should have some familiarity with it). Kathleen will bring additional poems or readings to further our conversation. This series is focused on poetry reading, rather than writing*, but still you might bring a notebook to jot down inspiring thoughts. his reading series is free and sponsored by City of Olympia.

Charles Mitchell and the Puget Sound Underground Railroad
The story of Charles Mitchell is currently the focus of an interpretative panel at Harbor House on Percival Landing.

Olympia Arts + Heritage Alliance (AHA) in partnership with the Olympia Historical Society and Bigelow House Museum and City of Olympia are sponsoring a presentation and discussion about the compelling story of Charles Mitchell. A 13-year-old boy, Mitchell escaped enslavement in Olympia in 1860 by traveling by steamer from Olympia to Victoria, B. C. via the Puget Sound Underground Railroad.

The program is Saturday April 20, 2024 at the Olympia Center 222 N. Columbia in Olympia at 1:00 pm and is open to the public.

Dr. Lorraine McConaghy, one of the authors of the book Free Boy which presented the biographies of Charles Mitchell and the man who enslaved him, James Tilton will offer an illustrated program followed by a moderated community discussion.

Bandana Printing with Faith Hagenhofer

In this fabric printing class with fiber artist and shepherd Faith Hagenhofer of Hercules Farm and Catspaw Studio, you'll design and carve two EZ-cut soft printing blocks, then use them to print a repeated pattern with white ink on two black bandanas. We also encourage you to share your blocks with other class members to broaden your design outcomes. Participants may bring up to 3 additional 22-inch pre-washed cotton fabric squares of their own choice for printing.
No prior carving and printing experience necessary. All materials provided. This class runs from 12 - 4:30 including a half hour break.

Explore the world of natural pigments with fiber artist and shepherd Faith Hagenhofer of Hercules Farm and Catspaw Studio. In this two-part class, we will design two pattern images, which we will carve on EZ-cut printing blocks. We will use natural materials to make fabric dyes and ink pigments, which we will use to dye and then print on fabric. All materials are provided in this comprehensive introduction to natural dyeing and printing.

Thurston County Board of County Commissioners declared racism a crisis in 2021 - Learn what Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Thurston County jurisdictions are doing to address barriers to racial equity, inclusion and belonging throughout Thurston County.
