Italy-Latin America Cooperation: the Foreign Ministry adopts training programs for Latin American Police Forces

In its last meeting, the Joint Committee for Italian Development Cooperation adopted, inter alia, two collaboration projects for Latin America's economic and financial security, which see the Guardia di Finanza and the Carabinieri as executing entities, within the framework of a strategic partnership collaboration with the Italo-Latin American Institute (IILA).

The aim is to support the training of police forces of Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile and Mexico on the main criminal phenomena directly connected to economic and financial flows, and the related methods to analyse, investigate and combat them. The aim is also to promote collaboration and information exchange between Italian and Latin American institutions in the sectors of environmental protection, health, conservation of cultural heritage and employment.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, welcomed the launch of the two new projects, as part of the process to relaunch Italian relations with Latin American partners, underlining that "among the areas of close collaboration, legal and security diplomacy are of fundamental importance for fighting against organized crime and for further spreading the culture of legality, which characterizes Italy's action in the region."

The training courses will focus on analysis, investigation and counter-crime methods, thus promoting information exchanges between the institutions involved to reduce crime rates and improve the countries' well-being.

Minister Tajani said: "Since the beginning of my mandate, I have wanted to clearly show that I intend to give priority to relations with Latin America, where I will be travelling shortly. We will carry out growth diplomacy actions to further strengthen our relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries."
