Defence Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador of Ireland to Bucharest

On Friday, April 26, Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, had a meeting with the Ambassador of Ireland to Bucharest, Brendan Ward.

The talks focused on the current security developments and ways of strengthening military relations at bilateral level as well as within the EU.

At the same time, the officials welcomed the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Defence of Ireland and the Ministry of National Defence of Romania on defence cooperation, emphasizing the importance of this paper, which provides the framework for an enhanced cooperation.

"Increasing interoperability between the Romanian and Irish Armed Forces is an essential element during the joint participation in international missions, and the recently signed memorandum provides us with the appropriate platform to intensify efforts at this level", the Minister of National Defence stated.

At the same time, the dialogue also focused on the recent developments at the EU level, on the security and defence dimension, the potential offered by new initiatives in the field of defence being emphasized. The Romanian official highlighted the national contribution to the missions and operations carried out under the aegis of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), as well as Romania's participation in EU defence initiatives. He also welcomed Ireland's involvement in the CSDP.

"Ireland's participation in the PESCO projects and in EU-led missions and operations emphasizes its commitment to cooperate with the European partners. At the same time, Ireland is an important partner for NATO. We will continue to identify concrete ways of cooperation, an essential aspect for managing the security challenges we are facing at regional and global levels", Minister Angel Tîlvăr pointed out.
