Appointment of Municipal Administrator in Tsiigehtchic

Today, the order declaring that the community of Tsiigehtchic is under Administration is in effect. This order will remain in effect until it is repealed at a date to be determined.

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) has determined that having an Administrator in place is an important step to support the community's successful transition to a Hamlet.

The order appoints Grant Scott as Municipal Administrator and relieves the Mayor and all members of the Tsiigehtchic Council of their duties. Administration is intended to reduce the risk of any potential operational challenges and ensure there are no service disruptions during the transition period.

MACA will work closely with Mr. Scott to uphold the goals of maintaining a strong community as Tsiigehtchic changes its status from a Charter Community Government to a Hamlet. Mr. Scott has over 20 years of experience working as a Senior Administration Officer in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Quote(s)

"Today we are supporting the community of Tsiigehtchic as it begins its transition to Hamlet status. MACA is happy to assist in the transition that was voted for by residents, and we look forward to having a new Hamlet Council in place as soon as possible."

- Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

Quick Facts

  • On May 23, 2023, 76% of Tsiigehtchic residents voted in favour of changing the status of the Charter Community Government to a Hamlet. The Minister is putting the community under Administration to ensure a successful transition.
  • The status change will result in two distinct and separate government structures: a Hamlet Council and a band council. As a Hamlet, the authority and operations of the community government will be more easily defined and separated, and all residents that are eligible to vote will be able to vote and/or run for Mayor and Councillor positions.
  • The Administrator replaces the Council. The Administrator may exercise the powers and shall perform the duties of the Council under the Charter Communities Act. Individuals can contact the Administrator if they have any concerns or questions.
  • Once the Minister is satisfied that the transition is complete and the new Council is ready to be elected, the Hamlets Act provides the Minister with the authority to revoke the Administration Order and call a new election.
