PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER The High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi pays a courtesy visit on the Speaker of the House of Representatives

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi paid a courtesy visit on the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anglu Farrugia.

In his introductory remarks, the Speaker stated that Malta looks forward to deepening cooperation with Malawi aimed at accruing benefits for both countries. Speaker Farrugia recalled that Malta and Malawi belong to several international organisations including the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organisation.

Specifically on Africa, Speaker Farrugia stressed that Malta and Malawi have similar views especially regarding the necessity of economic and political stability in the African continent. Both countries advocate peaceful solutions to the region's challenges through negotiation and dialogue. The Speaker welcomed Malawi's efforts to establish sound relationship with the European Union which could contribute to consolidate the peaceful platform for African countries.

The High Commissioner sought Malta considerate support to Malawi candidature for the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The election will be held during the 147th IPU General Assembly in Angola later this year.
