Neuhaus commends and thanks dedicated nurses of Orange County during National Nurses Week

Goshen, N.Y. -Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus recognized local nurses on Wednesday during National Nurses Week, which runs from May 6-12.

"Between Valley View and the Orange County Health Department, we have more than 200 dedicated nurses doing amazing work every day," Neuhaus said. "This is in addition to the thousands of other hardworking nurses at our local hospitals, clinics, and medical providers who are all making a difference. These professionals take special care of us, with pride and compassion. They deserve to be recognized and thanked for everything they do in our communities."

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. Nightingale is revered by many as the founder of modern nursing. She practiced in England and gained notoriety tending to soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856), a battle Russia lost to a union, which included England.

Nightingale died in 1910 at age 90. National Nurses Week recognizes the selfless work of nurses, who are often the first line of defense in the prevention of illness and injuries. The purpose of this week-long celebration is to raise awareness of the value of nursing and help educate the public about the role nurses play in meeting the growing healthcare needs of Americans.

"The nursing staff at Valley View is second to none," stated Valley View Executive Director Laurence LaDue. "These hardworking nurses make a difference every day, and they deserve this recognition of their compassionate care for our residents."

"On any given day, our public health nurses can be found doing in-home education for a young mother or consulting on a possible rabies exposure in the overnight hours, and many other important services in between," Orange County Health Commissioner Dr. Alicia Pointer stated. "We are very fortunate and proud to have such talented and dedicated nurses looking out for the health and well-being of Orange County residents."
