PORTLAND, Ore. - Defending men's champion Robbie Ziegler carded a 5-under par 67 and Aussie sensation Issy Taylor shot 2-under to lead their respective men's and women's divisions at the opening day of the Oregon Amateur Championship.
Monday's round was the first portion of a two-day stroke play qualifying. Following Tuesday's round, the low 64 men and 32 women will advance to a single-elimination match play bracket.
Ziegler (Portland) leads by two strokes over Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver) and Dustin Laney (Portland), who are tied for second at 3-under. Tibbits is coming off an appearance at last week's U.S. Open Championship where he narrowly missed the cut by one stroke.
Eighteen players on the men's side posted scores under par at Portland Golf Club's Par 72, 6,883-yard championship layout.
Taylor was the only player under par in the women's field, who played with afternoon start times on the first day. The future Oregon State Beaver, a native of Queensland, Australia, posted four birdies in her opening round.
Taylor has been red hot as of late, playing 11-under par in her last three rounds of OGA Championship competitions. She won last week's two-day Oregon Women's Stroke Play Championship with a score of 9-under par (68-67-135).
Four players are tied for second at 4-over par - Amanda Jacobs (Portland), Ellie Slama (Salem), Kaitlyn Howe (Wilsonville) and Victoria Gailey (Tigard).
The first groups start Tuesday at 7:30am. The championship runs through Saturday, June 22.
