Newport News Launches Bonus Program to Attract CDL Drivers

In an effort to attract potential employees for key positions, the City of Newport News has launched a "Breakthrough Bonus" program. The city is now offering up to $5,750 in tiered bonuses when individuals are hired into any full-time position that requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

"Much like other employers across the nation, the City of Newport News is experiencing a labor shortage," said Newport News City Manager Alan K. Archer. "The innovative Breakthrough Bonus program addresses gaps and fills critical positions. Our hope is that the talented employees we attract through the initiative will be integral parts of Team Newport News for years to come."

When individuals are hired into any full-time position requiring a CDL, they will receive $500 after successfully completing new employee orientation. Over the course of four years of employment with the city, they will receive a total of $5,750 in bonuses. Employees will receive the amounts below at the end of each of the following years:

  • Year One: $750
  • Year Two: $1,000
  • Year Three: $1,500
  • Year Four: $2,000

At this time, the City of Newport News is recruiting to fill 565 vacancies, 103 of which require applicants to have a CDL. The Public Works Department, which is most typically associated with CDL positions, is recruiting asphalt finishers and pipelayers. Other, less traditional departments, are looking for employees with a CDL, including Engineering, General Services, and Waterworks.

Incentives are also being provided to existing city employees who refer employees who are hired for CDL positions. Employees will receive $500 when the individual they referred is hired and an additional $750 after the person completes their first year of employment.

"While the referral money is attractive, our overall goal is to build a culture of retention," said Allison Dichoso, Director of Human Resources. "Newport News is the only municipality in the region with such a groundbreaking initiative. By strategically including existing employees in the hiring process, we are providing a personal connection to the success and investment in the growth of our city. We look forward to watching the Breakthrough Bonus program add to our already vibrant and engaging workplace culture."

Newport News currently offers a training program that helps individuals obtain a CDL. Applicants must obtain a CDL permit prior to their first day of employment; the city will provide ongoing training and funding to help as the new employee secures their CDL.
