Older persons safety event in Potters Bar

Older people in Potters Bar are being encouraged to sign up to a FREE safety event this March.

The 'safety, help and advice' event for people aged 60 and over, is taking place between 10am and 1pm on Thursday 16 March at The Wyllyotts Theatre.

Representatives from Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue, Hertfordshire Police, Trading Standards, MIND and the Alzheimer's Society will be at the event to offer advice and support.

Speakers will visit residents at their table and there will be stalls set up for people to discuss issues in more detail. Participants will also receive free refreshments and a hot lunch.

Participants at our previous event said 'I would like to thank Hertsmere Council for caring for the older community. It was also a lovely social gathering that benefited many of the elderly people who attended' and that 'it was an enjoyable half day with lots of useful information available'.

Councillor Pervez Choudhury, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: "I am delighted our highly successful event for older people is returning to Potters Bar and I would encourage our older residents to come along. The aim of the safety event is to help our older community feel safer by providing a sample of support, advice and help within the local community. Advice will be given on safety inside and outside the home, scams and how to avoid them; and how to live healthier, independent lives.

"Not only is this event about ensuring our older community learn about safety and the support available to them, but is also a great opportunity for residents to come together for a fun morning and to meet new people. Everyone will receive free refreshments and a delicious hot lunch, thanks to Herts Independent Living Service."

Steve Holton, Area Commander for Prevention in Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service welcomes the opportunity to be part of the countywide OPALS events. These events are aimed at the older person and cover a wide range of topics. Our statistics show that the elderly are more likely to become a victim of fire and having an opportunity to educate attendees on fire safety matters and possibly following this up with a home visit is something the fire service are proud to be involved in."
