Jeffries, Larson Statement on Social Security Trustees Report: Congress Must Act Now!

Washington, D.C. - Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries andWays and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the 2023 Social Security Trustees Report.

"For generations, Americans have relied on Social Security in order to retire with grace and dignity," said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. "House Democrats know how important this crucial program is and we will continue to fight back against extreme MAGA Republican attempts to cut the benefits that millions of Americans have earned after a lifetime of hard work. The 2023 Trustees Report makes clear that we need to strengthen and protect Social Security and I am grateful to Rep. Larson for his years of distinguished leadership on this issue. House Democrats are determined to ensure that Social Security remains solvent for the decades to come."

"Today's Trustees Report shows we must not only protect but also expand Social Security, something that has not been done in over 50 years," said Larson. "COVID has only exacerbated this problem having impacted people over age 65 more than any other group. Inflation further impacts people on fixed income, most of whom are over the age of 65. The problem is further compounded by the fact that 10,000 Baby Boomers a day becoming eligible for Social Security. Congress needs to act and vote on solutions. Now is the time to not merely protect but to also expand benefits that have not been addressed in over 50 years. President Biden called out Republicans in the State of the Union on Social Security. They now claim they will not cut the program, contrary to the plans they have put forward. Congress needs to act, and that is why Democrats will continue to put forward solutions like Social Security 2100."

Larson will soon reintroduce legislation, Social Security 2100, to enhance benefits and improve solvency.
