NETL Launches Web Application Making Data Accessible for Permitting and Risk Assessment of Carbon Storage

NETL's new CO2-Locate web application, now available on NETL's EDX®, offers decision makers access to a wide swath of information needed to help create a net-zero carbon emissions power sector.

The application is one of several new, innovative tools developed with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Safe and effective geologic carbon storage requires data to inform commercial and regulatory decisions. A key element of subsurface storage is the wellbores used to obtain information about the prospective subsurface storage reservoir and to inject CO2 into a target reservoir, and wells for long-term monitoring to assess and ensure long-term permanence of CO2 stored in the subsurface.

The CO2-Locate Database is an integrated national dataset representing open-source wellbore data from state and federal entities that was designed to provide interactive access to information for project managers, researchers, industry professionals, the public, and other stakeholders. It makes data publicly accessible for users to gain insights that can help reduce risk and uncertainty, streamline processes and reduce costs.

The CO2-Locate web application helps users review specific areas for injection, evaluate potential for monitoring wells, support risk assessments and analyze environmental and social justice metrics to help transition toward a sustainable future.
