A three-day online sub-regional workshop on strengthening nation-wide understanding of the World Heritage Convention’s principles and obligations

In the framework of the UNESCO/Netherlands Funds-in-Trust project 'Building capacity in managing World Heritage properties, interconnection of development and heritage preservation in Uzbekistan and Central Asia' the World Heritage Centre (UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France) is organizing, in close cooperation with the UNESCO Tashkent Office, a three-day online sub-regional workshop on 18-20 May 2021 on Zoom platform.

The main aim of this sub-regional workshop is to provide necessary technical assistance to Uzbekistan in its efforts in strengthening nation-wide understanding of the World Heritage Convention's principles and obligations, as well as to raise awareness of all the relevant stakeholders, policy-makers and decision-makers to ensure that all World Heritage properties in Central Asia will maintain their Outstanding Universal Value under the 1972 World Heritage Convention. Furthermore, participants are expected to strengthen their capacity in proactive planning and in taking an informed decision on any interventions on historic towns so that they will be empowered to address all the relevant issues related to development and heritage values, in a balanced way.

The workshop is conceived for specialists involved in the protection, management and preservation of cultural heritage, site managers, policy-makers, decision-makers and specialists from local authorities (Khokimiyat) of the World Heritage properties of Uzbekistan, as well as cultural heritage specialists from Ministries of Culture of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan as well as the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Samarkand, Uzbekistan).

The workshop will result in the adoption of a set of recommendations.
